Cracked, foggy, or drafty windows are more than an eyesore. They cost you money every month in lost energy efficiency. You don't always need to replace the entire window frame. In many cases, Stafford Glass Co. can replace just the glass unit itself, saving you significant time and money.

When Do You Need Window Glass Replacement?

    • Foggy Windows: When the seal on a double-pane insulated glass unit (IGU) fails, moisture gets trapped between the panes, causing a cloudy or foggy appearance. We can replace the IGU to restore clarity and efficiency.

    • Cracked or Broken Glass: Whether from a storm, an accident, or thermal stress, broken glass is a security and safety risk that needs immediate attention.

    • Drafty Windows: Upgrading to Low-E (low-emissivity) glass can significantly improve your home's insulation and lower your heating and cooling bills.

    Our Process

When you call Stafford Glass Co., we come out to measure the exact specifications of your existing window. We order the replacement glass (including matching any Low-E coatings or grids), and return to install it quickly and cleanly. We leave no mess behind, just a perfectly clear, energy-efficient window.

    Window Glass Replacement Questions, Answered

Common questions from homeowners in Fredericksburg and Northern Virginia. Still unsure? Call or text us at (540) 361-6907.

In most cases, yes. If your window frame is in good condition and the damage is limited to the glass itself, we can replace just the glass pane or the insulated glass unit inside the existing frame. This is significantly less expensive than a full window replacement and is often the right call for cracked, broken, or fogged glass.

Foggy double-pane windows are caused by a failed seal between the two glass panes. When the seal breaks, humid air gets trapped between the panes and condenses. The only fix is replacing the insulated glass unit, which we do regularly for homeowners throughout Fredericksburg and Northern Virginia. Trying to clean the inside of the glass is not possible without replacing the unit.

If the frame is intact, plumb, and not rotting or warping, glass-only replacement is usually the right answer. If the frame is damaged, off-square, or letting in drafts around the edges, a full window replacement may make more sense. We can assess this during your free estimate and give you an honest recommendation either way.

Most single window glass replacements take one to two hours. We measure your existing unit, fabricate or source the replacement glass, and install on a scheduled visit. If you have multiple windows, we can often complete them all in a single visit depending on quantity and location.

It depends on your policy and the cause of the damage. Accidental breakage is sometimes covered under comprehensive homeowner policies. Storm damage is typically covered. Normal wear and failed seals generally are not. We recommend calling your insurer to ask before paying out of pocket. We can provide documentation of the damage if needed.

Single-pane glass is a single layer of glass with no insulating properties, common in older homes. Double-pane glass has two layers with an air or gas-filled space between them, which significantly improves energy efficiency and sound reduction. Low-e glass adds a microscopic coating that reflects heat, keeping your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. We can help you choose the right option for your home and budget.
